HIGH SCHOOL FALL SPORTS: GC runners ranked No. 1

MERCER COUNTY AREA — Grove City cross country teams are on a roll this season and have scored well in some of the state’s top competitions.

The PIAA has established three divisions this year and Grove City is one of the highly rated teams in Class AA.

Coach Mike Semple’s Eagles boys, led by state runner-up Dan Jaskowak, are favored to win a third straight District 10 title this season and are ranked No. 1 in the state in AA in a recent poll.

The GC girls have 4 new freshman and some strong seniors are ranked 2nd in the District. The District 10 AA takes 2 teams, so the school is seeking to qualify both teams for the PIAA Championships on Nov. 3.

Grove City High’s boys’ and girls’ teams swept Wilmington recently, 15-50 and 22-37, respectively.

The Eagles ended 8th in the recent 40-team Spartans Invitational at Boardman, led by 3rd-place winner Jaskowak, while the Lady Eagles ended 11th out of 45 squads led by Hannah Sanford’s 33rd-place finish in a 298-competitor field.

Also at the recent Red-White & Blue Invitational in Pittsburgh, Jaskowak’s 3rd-place berth enabled the Eagles to end 3rd among 60 teams, while Sanford and Katie Jaskowak finished 59th and 61st, respectively (423 entrants), as Grove City garnered 19th out of 47 schools.

  • RANDOM THOUGHTS: Competitive cheerleading tough for even manly men

WHEN I THINK OF MYSELF, I think I’m one of the more manly men you’ll find.
I definitely don’t mind eating all kinds of meat and potatoes. I love watching sports — and participating in them when I can.
I do many other things that ‘real’ men do that aren’t fit for print and proper readers.
What I don’t do is wear skinny jeans or other tight-fitting clothes. I don’t wear jewelry nor do I wear colors that lean more to the femine side than the masculine side.
