MERCER COUNTY AREA — The PIAA split the high school golf tournament to two classes this season and Slippery Rock’s Brett Rinker is the first-ever District 10 Class AAA champion.

The Rockets senior star fired a 2-over-par 74 at Grove City Country Club Tuesday to cop the crown and earn one of two berths in the PIAA State Qualifier Tournament Monday at Tom’s Run Golf Course, Blairsville.

Second qualifier was Strong Vincent Tom Fosco, who posted a 77.

It marked the fourth straight  time that Rinker qualified to advance from the D-10 tourney, but it marked his first title.

In Class AA, Mercyhurst Prep’s Sean Sculley fired 81 and beat teammate Steave Kearns in a two-hole playoff for the title.

Other than Rinker, no other Allied News area golfers advanced. Grove City’s Ben Lucas and Slippery Rock’s Bob Paczkowski both shot 81 to tie for 5th in AAA.

In AA, Mercer’s Nate Guiler shot 90 and Lakeview’s Casey Greggs 96.

In the girls D-10 tourney at Riverside Golf Club, Cambridge Springs, Hickory’s Rosy Hearns shot 79 and won a playoff with North East’s Megan Moylan to cop the title. Grove City’s Fontaine McFeaters competed and shot 94.
