At Grove City, Trey Staunch slammed 2 homers, and Brandon Dick, Mike Gladysz, Riley Atterholt and Andrew Long lent round-trippers as West Middlesex topped GC 18-1 on Monday in the opening night of Little League All-Stars 12-year-old-and-under pool play.
Staunch struck out 11 in 4 frames of 1-hit pitching for the win. Also, Staunch, Chaz Burger and Long launched doubles, Long and Burger banged 2 singles, and Gladysz and Chris Mulkerin one each.
Jesse Hodge hammered a homer for Grove City, while he Chet Simoni and Noah Hazy took turns on the mound. Simoni fanned 4.
— Greenville 7, Mercer 4 — Greenville broke up a scoreless stalemate via a 2-run 3rd, then adding singletons in the 4th and 5th frames. Mercer mustered a game-tying 4-run 5th, before Greenville garnered a game-winning 3-run 6th stanza.
Winning pitcher Alex Gentile fanned 4 in 1ì innings of scoreless, 1-hit relief. He also hammered a homer to highlight Greenville’s 6th inning. Also, Lou Emmett ended with a 3-for-3 plate performance that included a double, and Andy Jones joined him with a two-bagger. Josh Johnson jolted 3 hits and Colin Yake, Gage Gladysz, Nick Black and Cody Nellis notched hits.
For Mercer, Isaac Adams’ 2 hits, Trenton Fowler’s triple, and base hits by Ike Williams, Nate Guiler and Trenton Fowler, Nate Cameron collected hits.
Guiler got into the 5th frame, but was tagged with the mound loss.
— Sharpsville 6, Reynolds 5 — At Sharpsville, Anthony DelFratte and Corey Stough slammed home runs, and Sharpsville pitchers Logan Eckles and Morgan Titus survived Reynolds’ rally. Reynolds led 5-3 entering the home half of the 5th frame, when Sharpsville surged to a go-ahead 3-spot.
Reynolds had the tying and go-ahead runs on base in the 6th, before Titus, in relief of Eckles, got the final out for the save. Eckles ended by fanning 4 in 5ì innings. Also for Sharpsville, DelFratte singled twice, Eckles and Titus drilled doubles, and Chris Enos, Eckles, Mitchell Fyffe, Tyler Lawler and Brad Calleja stroked singles.
For Reynolds, Nicholas Fuchs fashioned a complete-game pitching performance, fanning 4 and not yielding a walk, while Jacob Leipheimer lent 2 hits and Garrett Ammann, Jacob Reimold, Nick Pacifico and Adam Ballish one apiece.

Errors costly to GC 9
Grove City High baseball coach Pat Forese has been cautioning Eagle fans all year that his squad was an extremely youthful one.
The Eagles (8-5) proved their veteran coach right Monday afternoon by committing three actual errors and many other ‘mental’ errors in a 5-4 inter-region loss to General McLane at Grove City Memorial Park. -
HIGH SCHOOL SPRING SPORTS: GC girls team hot, then cold
Katy Perry may not have known it when she was singing ‘Hot N Cold’ that she was talking about the Grove City High School softball team’s offensive performance through 9 games this year.
The Lady Eagles’ offense has been ‘hot then cold’ for much of the 2012 campaign and unfortunately, they were ‘cold’ Monday afternoon in a 5-0 loss to visiting Titusville at Grove City Memorial Park.
“(The Lady Eagles’ offense) has been off and on,” said a coincidentally named Katie — first-year Grove City coach Katie Calano. “Sometimes, we’re on fire and sometimes, we’re not. Hopefully, we’ll be more consistent at the plate. We’re going to be working on that in practice.” -
Even in cold, Grove City spikers run hot
SLIPPERY ROCK -- The conditions weren’t exactly inviting Tuesday, but they weren’t any different than what most track teams practice in on a daily basis.
But as Grove City coach Mickey Hardenburg likes to tell his boys and girls squads, they may be what they face at the District 10 meet in a month and at the state meet in Shippensburg a week later. -
