HIGH SCHOOL FALL SPORTS: GC girl netters earn D-10 berth

MERCER COUNTY AREA — Grove City High girls’ tennis team captured the District 10 Region 1 championship Wednesday afternoon via a 3-2 victory over Hickory at New Wilmington.

The Lady Eagles (13-2) ended up sweeping all 3 singles matches, including straight-sets sweeps from Meredith Trent, Abby Casalnova and Reba Duran.

For Hickory (12-3), the doubles duos of Lauren Kizak-Nikki Morgenstern and Rachel Mettee-Lauren McGonigle triumphed.

The teams ended as regular-season region co-champions; however, with Wednesday’s win Grove City will advance to the District 10 Team Championships Oct. 18, Hickory coach Diane Vermeire reported.

ä Grove City 5, Greenville 0 — At Grove City, the Lady Eagles improved to 12-2 with the sweep of the Lady Trojans.

ä Mercer 10, West Middlesex 0 — At West Middlesex, Mercer goalie Alan Rabold set a single-season school record with his 11th shutout, breaking the mark of 10 shared by Joel Solomon and Joel Pyle, as the Mustangs (7-0-1, 12-1-1) beat WM in a Region 1 matchup.

Trenton Fowler had 2 goals for Mercer, Will Juergens posted 1 goal and 3 assists, Matt Juergens registered 1 goal and 1 assist, Rabold, Nate Kroll, Adam Hogue, Alex Shaffer, Nate Breese and Chase Hoffman had goals, Zach Kroll was credited with 3 assists and Trevor Fowler had an assist.

ä Wilmington 1, Grove City 0 — In a match otherwise dominated by Grove City, Wilmington (10-1, 6-1) defeated the Eagles (7-8, 1-6) with just 1 shot on goal Tuesday night.

Marc Delio scored for the Greyhounds in the 1st half.

Grove City had 34 offensive attacks, 21 shots, 8 shots on goal and 2 corner kicks. Wilmington had 14 attacks, 9 shots and 1 shot on goal.



GIRLS SOCCER

ä Mercer 2, Girard 0 — At Girard, Megan McKinney scored off an assist from Sarah Stevens with 5 minutes left in the match to seal the win as the Lady M’s (10-3-1) topped Girard.

Stevens scored in the 1st half for Mercer off an assist from Lexie Arkwright. Analise Whenry notched her 8th shutout of the season between the pipes for Mercer.

ä Mercer 3, West Middlesex 1 — At West Middlesex, Megan McKinney mustered a hat trick as the visiting Lady M’s won their 8th consecutive match.

Kaitlynn Mostard-Smith’s corner kick set up the 1st goal, and she was credited on the 3rd, while Lexi Arkwright added another. Analise Whenry did not permit a goal.

Shae Romain scored off Delaney David’s crossing pass for the Ms. Reds.

ä Mercer 3, Sharpsville 0 — At Lamor Road, Mercer, on Monday, the host Lady M’s of coach Eric Weller scored twice in the 1st half and once in the 2nd half. Megan McKinney had 2 goals for Mercer, Lexie Arwright 1; assists came from Sami Carr, Alexis Mills and Analise Whenry, and Whenry had 15 saves in goal, also.

Megan Whalen had 9 saves for Sharpsville.

BOYS CROSS COUNTRY

ä Wilmington 23, Slippery Rock 32 — At New Wilmington, the host Hounds prevailed, led by top-10 finishes by frosh Jared Thomas, Calvin Gealy, Ryan Davis, Zach Paden and Derek Craig.

Slippery Rock’s Caleb Bickel bested the field in 18:10, 14 seconds ahead of Thomas.

ä Commodore Perry 15, Mercer 50 (forfeit) — At Hadley, the host Panthers’ Nate White won the exhibition in 17:53, 4 ticks ahead of Mercer’s Kevin Reno. The Mustangs did not field a full squad.

GIRLS CROSS COUNTRY

ä Commodore Perry 22, Mercer 36 — At Hadley, Shanna McGowan won in a time of 25:28 to pace the host Lady Panthers.

ä Wilmington 20, Slippery Rock 35 — At New Wilmington, the host Lady Hounds’ Rikki Brumbaugh, Hannah Drake, Hannah Winters and Kate Robb roared to the top 4 berths. Brumbaugh bested the field in 21:39, and their pack time was 6:05.

ä Sharpsville 27, James-town 29 — At Sharpsville, the host Blue Darlings’ Madison Przicina posted a 21:20 clocking, less than a minute ahead of teammate Cassie Lukonic.
