Tip shot
— Out of misery
After adding veteran backup quarterback Seneca Wallace, the Cleveland Browns released former starter Derek Anderson and are now reportedly shopping Brady Quinn.
"The fans are ruthless and don't deserve a winner," Anderson said after being released. "I will never forget getting cheered when I was injured.
The 26-year-old who started 34 games for the Browns later apologized for the comments, citing that they came out of frustration. By releasing Anderson, Cleveland avoided paying the player a $2 million roster bonus and $7.45 million due to him next season.
Quinn was taken by the Browns in the first round of 2007's NFL Draft. In 14 games with the team, he's thrown 10 touchdown passes and 9 interceptions.
The Browns hired former Seattle head coach Mike Holmgren to guide the franchise as its new president. Wallace played under Holmgren with the Seahawks.
Lucky numbers
8 — The full seasons infielder Nomar Garciaparra spent with the Boston Red Sox before being traded just months before the franchise won its first World Series in 86 years.
The now 38-year-old was a 6-time All Star. He signed a one-day contract with Boston this week to retire as a member of the Red Sox after lingering around MLB the past six years with the Chicago Cubs, Los Angeles Dodgers and Oakland Athletics.
"Everywhere I go I get so many (Red Sox fans) come to me and tell me 'Thank you. We miss you. We still love you,'" Garciaparra said. "And it's so genuine and the feeling is mutual. Hopefully from my actions throughout my career in that uniform and hopefully my actions today again tell them what it means to me."
12 — The touchdowns Antwaan Randle El had in from 2002 to 2005 with the Pittsburgh Steelers before leaving through free agency to join the Washington Redskins.
The Steelers resigned the now 30-year-old wideout this week. It's still unknown how head coach Mike Tomlin plans to work him into the offense with receivers Santonio Holmes, Hines Ward, Mike Wallace and the newly-signed Arnaz Battle also in the fold.
Both Randle El and Battle were former college quarterbacks – Randle El at Indiana and Battle at Notre Dame.
48 — The age of hockey player Chris Chelios, who after playing this season with Atlanta's minor league affiliate was called up to the NHL squad this week.
In 26 seasons in the NHL, the veteran defenseman's scored 185 goals in longterm stints with Montreal, Chicago and Detroit.

HIGH SCHOOL WINTER SPORTS: Lakeview 5 passes the test
STONEBORO – In high school, teachers will give pretests as a way for their students to prepare for an upcoming exam.
The Lakeview Sailors (13-4) received their ‘pretest’ last Monday in the form of Region 5-AA foe Iroquois (8-7) and passed it with a solid ‘A’ by beating the Braves 73-53.
“We really wanted to make this somewhat of a statement game,” Lakeview coach Gary Burke said. “We know Iroquois is fighting for their lives to get into District 10 playoffs. We knew they took Mercyhurst Prep to the wire Friday night. We wanted to prove that we can play the game pretty well down here in the south. It’s been a long time since (Mercer County) team has gone to the playoffs and performed well. This was a great test for us to give us that Erie County flavor. I couldn’t be happier with the performance.” -
High School Football: Coleman too much in Rockets’ trip to Hickory
The foibles of the Philadelphia Eagles - poor tackling and turnovers - have been well documented through the NFL’s first five weeks. Friday night at Hornet Stadium, stalemated at the half with Slippery Rock High 14-all, Hickory was exhibiting some of those aforementioned shortcomings. But while floundering Philly feels its way toward finding a solution, the Hornets have their own anecdote: DeShawn Coleman.
