The Lakeview High Lady Sailors picked up their first win of the season Saturday, rallying from an 8-point third-quarter deficit for a 35-34 win over visiting Reynolds.
Lakeview senior Laura Sturgin knotted the game at 34-34 on a free throw with just 8.2 seconds left to play. Sturgin then his a second shot from the charity stripe to give the Lady Sailors the lead.
“(They were) two big foul shots,” Lakeview head coach Steve Aden said. “She played hard all game. She rebounded hard for me. I was glad to see her make the two shots.”
Aden was even more impressed by watching his players battle back into contention late in the contest — something he said the girls have struggled to do all season.
“We fought back,” Aden said. “I was glad that they were able to (finally) sustain a lead and we did it tonight.”
Lakeview led after the opening frame 10-8, but the Lady Raiders (1-7, 4-11) held the Lady Sailors to just four second-quarter points to take the 18-14 halftime edge.
Reynolds was up by as many as eight early in the third quarter, but back-to-back buckets from Fawn Miller cut the deficit to just four with 3:30 left.
Later in the quarter, the Lady Sailors tied the game at 24 on a steal by Cassandra Legal and basket by Jazmyne Sasse. Lakeview then took its first lead since late in the second quarter on a field goal by Miller.
The Lady Raiders didn’t give up the fight, either. Reynolds tied the game again, this time at 30-30, with three minutes left to play in the fourth quarter on a basket by Emily Moroco.
The two successful free throws from Sturgin, though, and another earlier from Miller shut the door on the Lady Raiders.
The season hasn’t been easy, Aden said, as the Lady Sailors had lost all 15 games the team had played before Saturday’s win.
“We talk a lot about taking the right steps,” Aden said. "We just didn't know how to win."
Miller led Lakeview with 18 points. Double-digit scorers for Reynolds included Kristen McDonald with 10 and Emily Moroco who finished with 13 — eight of which came in the fourth quarter.
