˛ Two times a trend?
For the second time in less than a year, Pittsburgh Steelers’ quarterback Ben Roethlisberger is battling allegations he had inappropriate contact with a woman.
The latest incident was said to have occurred late last week at a bar in Georgia where Roethlisberger has a home.
Details from the alleged incident are still grainy. As of late Monday, charges had yet to be filed against Roethlisberger.
˛ Shuffling Cards
Just a year after facing the Steelers in Super Bowl XLIII, Arizona Cardinals’ head coach and ex-Pittsburgh offensive coordinator Ken Whisenhunt is seeing a changeover in his team’s personnel.
Only weeks after Cardinals’ quarterback Kurt Warner announced he was retiring from the NFL, safety Antrel Rolle signed with the New York Giants, linebacker Karlos Dansby inked a deal with Miami and wideout Anquan Boldin was traded to Steelers’ AFC North division rival Baltimore.
On his way to Arizona, though, will be ex-New York Jets safety Kerry Rhodes, a 2006 Pro Bowler.
"We all know that the safety position was a hole we needed to fill," Whisenhunt said. "To be able to do that so quickly and with a proven starter off the NFL's No. 1 defense is a tremendous positive for our football team.”
Whisenhunt, who last month became the first coach in the longtime-struggling franchise’s history to sign an extension with the Cardinals, is signed on to guide the team through at least 2013.
Lucky number
2 — The seed head coach Jamie Dixon’s Pitt Panthers will be in the Big East tournament when the open play in the annual event Thursday evening at Madison Square Garden in New York City.
The Panthers, who surprised many by finishing the regular season 24-7 after losing stars Levance Fields, Sam Young and DeJuan Blair after last year’s upset by Villanova in the Elite Eight, were picked to finish no better than eighth in conference according to the preseason Big East polls.
"I think it shows how much we've come together from the beginning of the year," junior Gilbert Brown told the Pittsburgh Post-Gazette. "It's a real testament to how hard we work. Nobody predicted us to finish No. 2. That really makes us feel proud as a unit."
"It says a lot about this group and the character they have to finish in second place," Dixon added in the interview with the newspaper.
The tournament opened Tuesday. The Panthers will play the winner of tonight’s game between Notre Dame and either Seton Hall or Rutgers.

HIGH SCHOOL WINTER SPORTS: Lakeview 5 passes the test
STONEBORO – In high school, teachers will give pretests as a way for their students to prepare for an upcoming exam.
The Lakeview Sailors (13-4) received their ‘pretest’ last Monday in the form of Region 5-AA foe Iroquois (8-7) and passed it with a solid ‘A’ by beating the Braves 73-53.
“We really wanted to make this somewhat of a statement game,” Lakeview coach Gary Burke said. “We know Iroquois is fighting for their lives to get into District 10 playoffs. We knew they took Mercyhurst Prep to the wire Friday night. We wanted to prove that we can play the game pretty well down here in the south. It’s been a long time since (Mercer County) team has gone to the playoffs and performed well. This was a great test for us to give us that Erie County flavor. I couldn’t be happier with the performance.” -
High School Football: Coleman too much in Rockets’ trip to Hickory
The foibles of the Philadelphia Eagles - poor tackling and turnovers - have been well documented through the NFL’s first five weeks. Friday night at Hornet Stadium, stalemated at the half with Slippery Rock High 14-all, Hickory was exhibiting some of those aforementioned shortcomings. But while floundering Philly feels its way toward finding a solution, the Hornets have their own anecdote: DeShawn Coleman.
