Joanne W. Swartz

Homemaker was active in Coolspring Presbyterian

FAIRVIEW — Joanne W. Swartz, formerly of 501 Coolspring Church Road, Fairview Township, passed away at 8:41 a.m. Sunday (11-25-12) in UPMC Horizon, Farrell, after a short illness. She was 79.

Born June 19, 1933, in Sharon, Mrs. Swartz was a daughter of Ralph E. and Helen J. Campbell McWhirter.

She attended Mercer High School.

Mrs. Swartz was a member of Coolspring Presbyterian Church, Fairview Township, where she had served as a trustee and Sunday school teacher and was a member of the Dorcas Circle and Chicken Pie Supper Committee.

During her life, she volunteered for the American Cancer Society and the Mercer Christian Center. In her earlier years, Joanne was a Brownie Scout leader.

Most of all, she was proud to be a homemaker and was a loving wife, mother, grandmother and great-grandmother.

During her life, Joanne compassionately supported others during difficult times. She will be remembered by family and friends for her humor, creativity and great cooking.

Her husband, William J. 'Bill' Swartz, whom she married Jan. 13, 1950, survives at Countryside Convalescent Home, East Lackawannock Township.

Also surviving are two daughters, Barbara J. Swartz; and Cathy Logan Berent and her husband Matthew, all Sharon; a son, Brian W. Swartz and his wife Rhonda, Mercer; two grandchildren, Mason Clark, Naples, Fla.; and Leah Schulenburg and her husband Matt, St. Simons Island, Ga.; a great-granddaughter, Liliana Eve Schulenburg, St. Simons Island; and a brother, Richard E. McWhirter, North Las Vegas, Nev.

She was preceded in death by her parents; a sister, Helen Ruth Black; and her beloved little dog, Chloe.

Calling hours were Saturday (12-1-12) in Coolspring Presbyterian Church, 787 Coolspring Church Road, Fairview Township.

Funeral and committal was Saturday in the church, with the Rev. John B. Creekpaum, pastor, officiating.

Interment in Millbank Cemetery, Fairview Township.

Memorial contributions may be made to Coolspring Presbyterian Church, 787 Coolspring Church Road, Mercer, PA 16137; or Strayhaven Animal Shelter, Box 464, Greenville, PA 16125.

Arrangements by Scott A. Black Funeral Home, 99 Franklin St., Stoneboro.
