Irene Elizabeth Hamelly-Turek of Grove City, died early Thursday morning (12-20-12) in the hospital of Sharon Regional Health System. She was 90 years old.
Mrs. Hamelly-Turek was born May 31, 1922, in Jackson Center to John and Pauline Zelinski Hamelly.
She was a class of 1940 graduate of Grove City High School, after which she attended comptometer school.
During World War II, Irene made her home in the Shenango Valley and was employed as a payroll clerk by the former Sharon Transformer Division of Westinghouse Electric Corp.
During that time, she and her two sisters enjoyed going to USO dances at the Buhl Casino at Buhl Farm park in Sharon.
She married her beloved husband, Edward Walter Turek, on July 8, 1944. Shortly after her marriage, Irene became a full-time homemaker and mother.
Her husband passed away Oct. 16, 1995. Irene enjoyed shopping trips with her daughters, visits from family and friends, reading and attending luncheons with her high school classmates.
In 2010, she was instrumental in assisting with the organization and event planning for the successful 70th class reunion of Grove City High School class of 1940.
She was a longtime member of Church of the Beloved Disciple in Pine Township, and had been receiving First Friday communion for shut-ins from St. Michael's Church in Greenville. For the last couple of years, she made her home with her daughter, Kathy, and son-in-law, Dr. Gordon Frissora, Fredonia.
She is survived by her daughters, Mary Ellen Margolis, Menlo Park, Calif.; and Kathy "Kate" Frissora and her husband Dr. Gordon G. Frissora, Fredonia; her four sons, James Turek and his wife Jane, Grove City; Thomas Turek and his wife Elaine, Elmira, N.Y.; John Turek and his wife Nancy, Sonoma, Calif.; and Robert Turek, Peru.
Also surviving are 10 grandchildren, Leilani Gibson-Schneer and her husband Gary, Delphos, Ohio; Sara Gibson-Horton and her husband Joey, Elida, Ohio; Adam Gibson, Lynwood, Wash.; Ryan Gibson and his wife Brianne, Farmington, Ohio; John Margolis, Menlo Park; Danny Turek and his wife Erika, Milwaukee, Wis.; Eddie Turek and his wife Heather, Tallmadge, Ohio; and Susan Turek, Mathew Turek and Michael Turek, all Grove City. In addition, she is survived by nine great-grandchildren, Adam, Emma, Anna and Lillian Schneer; Gaige and Brody Horton; Ryan and Allison Gibson; and Benjamin Turek.
She is also survived by a younger brother, Frank Hamelly and his wife Miriam, Jackson Center; a sister, Helen Feather, Jefferson City, Mo.; and sister-in-law, Ethel Hamelly, Clearwater, Fla.
In addition to her loving husband, Edward Walter Turek, who passed away in 1995, she was preceded in death by an infant son, Walter, who passed away shortly after birth in 1954; and her first-born daughter, Joanne Gibson, Elida, Ohio, who passed away in 2001. Also preceding her in death were her parents, John and Pauline Zelinski-Hamelly of Jackson Center; a sister, Emma Hamelly-Bryer of Ocala, Fla.; and brothers, Henry Hamelly of Grove City; and Lewis Hamelly of New Castle.
Calling hours were Sunday (12-23-12) in Cunningham Funeral Home Inc., Grove City.
Mass of Christian burial was Monday (12-24-12) in Church of the Beloved Disciple, Pine Township, with the Rev. Michael P. Allison, pastor, as celebrant.
Interment in Crestview Memorial Park, Inc., Grove City.
