WINTER HAVEN, Fla. — Peter J. Mathias of Winter Haven, who passed away at 1:45 p.m. Tuesday, Sept. 4, 2012, in Life Care Center of Winter Haven. He was 94.

Mr. Mathias was born April 22, 1918, in Pittsburgh to Andrew and Helen Matiasz. He moved to Florida from Sharpsville in 2006.

He was a retired electrician from Westinghouse after 35 years.

Mr. Mathias was a member of Chestnut Ridge Church of God in Hubbard Township, Trumbull County. Peter and his sister played harmonicas together at worship services.

As a veteran of World War II, he served in the Navy on the USS Massachusetts.

Peter was preceded in death by his wife, Anna “Peggy” Mathias; his parents; and a brother, William Matiasz. Survivors include: a daughter, Debra Billings, Winter Haven; two sons, John E. Mathias, Winter Haven; and William E. Mathias, Kansas City, Mo.; a sister, Annie Matiasz, Jackson Center; six grandchildren, Alicia Zahniser, Britany Roe, Angie Bracken, Mandy Ivancevich, Melody Tomlinson and Andrew Mathias; and 12 great-grandchildren.

The family would like to give a special thanks to the staff at Life Care Center and Cornerstone Hospice for taking care of Dad.

Calling hours are 1 p.m. to time of service Wednesday (9-8-12) in South Lake Wales (Fla.) Church of God. Condolences may be sent to the family and the webcast of the service can be viewed at www.marionnelsonfuneralhome.com

Funeral service at 2 p.m. Wednesday in the church, with the Rev. El Kelley officiating.

Arrangements by Marion Nelson Funeral Home, 454 S. Buck Moore Road, Lake Wales.

In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to South Lake Wales Church of God Building Fund, 210 Presidents Drive, Lake Wales, FL 33859; or Chestnut Ridge Church of God, 7215 Chestnut Ridge Road, Hubbard, OH 44425.
