SHARON —
William Lee Vaughan of Springfield Township, passed away at 1:26 p.m. Tuesday, June 19, 2012, in the hospital of Sharon Regional Health System. He was 73.
Mr. Vaughan was born Oct. 25, 1938, in New Castle to Robert William Vaughan and Harriet Heasley Vaughan.
He was a self-employed businessman, owning and operating an auto body shop and the Landmark Hotel along with his son, both located in Springfield Township.
As a young man, William was well-known as a stock car racer and had won many awards at Mercer Raceway. He enjoyed NASCAR, motorcycles and any kind of stock and strip car racing and was a recent sponsor of his grandson's drag strip car race.
His wife, the former Elizabeth "Libby" McNulty, whom he married Sept. 28, 1962, died April 1, 2007.
Survivors include: two daughters, Kathleen Mae and her husband Michael Kloos, West Middlesex; and Donna Love, New Castle; two sons, Rex William Vaughan and his wife Karen, Mercer; and Kevin Allen Vaughan and his wife Paula, Volant; eight grandchildren, Ashley and Jaime Kloos, William "Billy" Vaughan; Matthew, Crystal and Rachel Vaughan; and Fred Mathieson and Jerek Shankle; and seven great-grandchildren, Dustin, Katie, Abigail, Colton, Jayden Elizabeth, Hannah and Aryan.
Besides his wife, Libby, he was preceded in death by his parents; a son, Darl "Pete" Delane Vaughan; and an infant granddaughter, Jennifer.
Calling hours were Friday (6-22-12) and Saturday (6-23-12) in Smith Funeral Home of Leesburg, Springfield Township.
Funeral service was Sunday (6-24-12) in the funeral home with the Rev. James Lewis, pastor of West Liberty United Methodist Church, officiating. Following the service a motorcycle brigade escorted the family procession to the cemetery.
Interment in Leesburg Cemetery.
