BUTLER —
Patrick Joseph 'Joe' Downing, Slippery Rock Township, formerly of Pittsburgh, died about 9 p.m. Wednesday (1-23-13) in VNA Hospice Butler. He was 85.
Mr. Downing was born March 20, 1927 in Braddock, Pa., Allegheny County, to Patrick Joseph and Mary Olive Couch Downing.
He was a Navy veteran, serving with the Seabees during World War II and the Korean conflict.
Mr. Downing worked for J.S. McCormick, Pittsburgh. He was plant manager with the company in Boyers.
He was a member of St. Peter's Roman Catholic Church, Slippery Rock.
He enjoyed spending time with his family and vacationing in Myrtle Beach, S.C.
Mr. Downing married the former Jean Anna Wise on Nov. 10, 1950. She survives.
Also surviving are: two daughters, Diane J. Duryea, wife of Dr. David Duryea, Slippery Rock; and Patricia H. Pepper, Slippery Rock; a brother, Richard Downing, husband of Ruth, Stratford, Conn.; a sister, Mary Caulfield, West Mifflin, Pa.; seven grandchildren, Megan Duryea- Santana, wife of Andrew; Erin Duryea- Gilsbach, wife of Timothy; Amanda Duryea-Wolf, wife of Philip; Jeana Duryea Forrest, wife of Matthew); Michael Duryea; Brian Pepper, husband of Carrie; and Sara Pepper-Randolph; nine great-grandchildren, Susan, Colleen and Anne Gilsbach; Madeline Santana; Noah, and Jonah Pepper; and Brooklyn, Gavin, and Landon Randolph.
He was preceded in death by his Parents; a brother, Philip; and a sister, Jane McMullen.
Calling hours are from 2 to 4 and 6 to 8 p.m. Sunday (1-27-13) in Smith Funeral Home, 421 New Castle Street, Slippery Rock.
Mass of Christian burial at 11 a.m. Monday (1-28-13) in St. Peter's Roman Catholic Church, 670 S. Main St., Slippery Rock, with Fr. Kevin Poecking, pastor, as celebrant.
Interment in Slippery Rock Cemetery.
