Vet was Jackson Center family business owner

BUTLER — William A. Montgomery, Jackson Center, passed away at 10:10 a.m. Wednesday (1-23-13) in Visiting Nurses Association Inpatient Hospice, Butler, after a short illness. He was 83.

Born June 6, 1929, in Stoneboro, Mr. Montgomery was a son of William and Mary C. Janes Montgomery.

He was a 1947 graduate of the former Stoneboro High School and took business law courses at the Shenango campus of Penn State University, Sharon.

Seventy-seven years ago, Mr. Montgomery co-founded Montgomery's Mill of Jackson Center with his father, which they operated as a feed mill for many years. It later became Montgomery's Hardware Inc., which is currently owned and operated by his two sons. In the feed mill years, he traveled to Purina headquarters in St. Louis for many seminars as a local feed representative.

As a lifetime member of Jackson Center Presbyterian Church, he had served as an elder.

Bill was a member of the Jackson Grange 1506 for more than 65 years.

For more than 50 years, Mr. Montgomery enjoyed camping around the United States and along French Creek near Utica. In early years, he and his wife enjoyed square dancing and competed on the Jackson Grange team at the Pennsylvania State Farm Show. The two enjoyed traveling to the Bahamas, Hawaii, Opryland and Acapulco. He also enjoyed woodworking, gardening and feeding the birds.

Most of all, William was a loving husband, father and grandfather who set a fine example of hard work and integrity for his children and grandchildren.

He was an Army Korean conflict veteran, serving with the 42nd Infantry Division in Germany.

His wife, the former June E. Worley, whom he married Sept. 25, 1950, survives at home.

Also surviving are: a daughter, Anne M. Montgomery, Lancaster, Pa.; two sons, Dean W. Montgomery and his wife Debra; and Carl D. Montgomery, Jackson Center, and his friend Mary Say, Franklin; six grandchildren, Dr. Jennifer S. Cheung, MD, and her husband Dr. Albert Y. Cheung, MD, Farmington Hills, Mich.; Bradley L. Montgomery, Jackson Center; Kelly L. Damor and her husband Narendra, Fort Hood, Texas; Jaretta A. Barker and her husband Daniel W., Stoneboro; and Justin W. Montgomery and Eric W. Montgomery, both Jackson Center; a great-grandson, Micah Levi Damor; and two sisters, Janet L. McClearn, Sandy Lake; and Judith A. Vath, Grove City.

He was preceded in death by his parents.

Calling hours were Friday (1-25-13) and will be from 10 a.m. to time of service today (1-26-13) in Scott A. Black Funeral Home, 99 Franklin St., Stoneboro.
