DES MOINES, Iowa —
Harold Floyd Oakes of Mercer, Mo., formerly of Jackson Center, passed away Nov. 27, 2012, in Mercer Medical Center, Des Moines. He was 75.
Mr. Oakes was a son of Floyd B. and Esther C. Williams Oakes, born on April 25, 1937, in Jackson Center.
Harold was raised in Jackson Center and was a 1955 graduate of Lakeview High School in Sandy Lake Township.
He worked for Higbee Septic Service in Jackson Center until he moved to Missouri in 1960. He was a Meyer's Milk Man for years and also did backhoe work in Independence, Mo., before moving in 1967 to Odessa, Mo., where he started his own business, Oakes Ditching and Septic Tank Service.
In 1981, he dissolved his business and went to work for Wilson Road Bores of Mercer County, Mo. After semi-retirement, he continued to do backhoe and trackhoe work on the side.
Harold was married to Janet James on July 1, 1982, who survives at home.
He also leaves three sons, Harold Andrew and his wife Lynne, Missouri; Alan Oakes and his wife Joyce, California; and Tim Oakes and his wife Michele, Florida; a daughter, Pam Corn and her husband Rick, Missouri; 11 grandchildren, Misty, John, Shelly, Brian, Levi, Michael, Morgan, Kyle, Garrett, Joel and Eric; eight great-grandchildren; four stepchildren, Tim, Tony, Tina and Terry James; and two sisters, Julia Oakes Adams and her husband Jim; and Nina Oakes Michaels, both Mercer; and many nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by his parents and two infant sons, David Allen and Matthew Allan Oakes.
Harold had a great love for his tractors and won first place at the Missouri State Fair Tractor Pull with his Super Farmall "M," and various other prizes.
He loved his family, his wife, his dear, dear friends and hunting. Harold saw good in everyone, lived a happy and full life and will be greatly missed and never forgotten. He leaves us all with many great memories, which will live on through us.
