Joseph Matthew Ivers

Letter carrier, Army vet, was active in lodges

COOLSPRING — Joseph Matthew Ivers of 125 S. Otter St., Mercer, passed away at 11:15 p.m. Thursday (2-14-13) in Avalon Springs, Coolspring Township. He was 82.

Joe was born Sept. 27, 1930, to Gilbert C. and Elvira S. "Vera" Halter Ivers in Pittsburgh.

Joe attended St. Justin's and Prospect schools before moving to Sharpsville with his mother and beloved stepfather, Robert H. Klein.

Joe graduated in 1949 from Mercer High School, where he played football. He planned to attend Westminster College, New Wilmington, to play football, but instead enlisted in the U.S. Army at age 19.

He received his basic training at Fort Knox, Ky., and was transferred to Scofield Barracks in Hawaii. On Aug. 1, 1950, he was sent to battle on the front lines of the Korean War as part of the 5th RCT Infantry Regimental Combat Team.

Joe was wounded Oct. 29, 1950, during combat 10 miles from the Yellow River at the Chinese border. He recovered on the hospital ship USS Haven and on another ship off the coast of Japan. He was discharged in August 1951 from Fort Campbell, Ky. Joe received a Purple Heart.

Joe was a member of the American Legion and Wilbur Rhodes Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 6345, Mercer, where he was a past commander. He was honored with other Korean War veterans during a Mercer Memorial Day 500 parade and celebration.

He was previously a member of the Knights of Columbus, Mercer, where he was a past Grand Knight.

Joe was once employed by the Pennsylvania Fish and Boat Commission, and retired from the Mercer branch of the U.S. Postal Service as a letter carrier.

Joe enjoyed hunting, fishing and camping throughout his life. He enjoyed archery, participating in many tournaments.

He was a lover of Pittsburgh sports and an avid fan of the Notre Dame Fighting Irish. He fulfilled a dream when he saw the Irish play.

He is survived by his wife, Donna Mae Schulz Ivers, Mercer; two daughters: Karen Heazlett; and Michelle Kardasz and her husband, David, all of Mercer; three granddaughters: Mary Heazlett, Christie Cornelius and Samantha Kardasz; four stepdaughters: Marlene Noren, Tarpon Springs, Fla.; Jennifer McLaughlin and her husband, Bill, Aberdeen, Md.; Tarri Drape and her husband, Doug, Lutz. Fla.; and Roberta Maier and her husband, John, Odessa, Fla.

Joe was preceded in death by his parents; his stepfather; his brother, Gilbert A. Ivers; and a son-in-law, Robert Heazlett.

Calling hours and funeral service were Monday (2-18-13) in Cunningham Funeral Home, Mercer, with the Rev. Richard C. Nero, chaplain of Southern Care, officiating.
