ERIE —
Alice May Roy Hoover, a resident of 411 Sheriff St., Mercer, for 50 years, passed away at 4:12 p.m., Thursday (1-31-13) in UPMC Hamot, Erie, following a brief illness. She was 84.
She was born in her grandmother's home near Jamestown on Wednesday, Sept. 26, 1928, a daughter of King C. Roy and Minnie B. Wiser Roy.
She attended Jamestown schools and graduated from Jamestown High in 1947.
On Dec. 8, 1955, she married Harold L. Hoover, who survives at home.
Alice was employed for several years as a counter person by Cohen Auto Parts in Hermitage and later by Appod Datsun Dealership in Sharon as parts manager. Her latest employment was with the Pennsylvania Motor Vehicle Department as a picture taker for drivers' licenses.
For many years, she had been a member of the American Blind Bowling Association and served as the tournament director for 16 years and later as secretary-treasurer for four years. She was a life member and in 1989 was awarded the prestigious Abe Cohen award for Outstanding Leadership and Dedication to the organization.
Along with her husband, she is survived by two daughters, Lorrayne (Michael) Walsh, Davenport, Iowa; and Theresa (Bruce) Vernon, Fredonia; a son, Richard G. (Joyceanna) Hoover, Aiken, S.C.; a sister Evelyn Smith, Erie; five brothers, Prince Roy, Ohio; Russell, Raymond and Larry (Pat) Roy, all Jamestown, and Richard Roy, Beaver; and six grandchildren and a great-granddaughter.
Alice enjoyed reading and doing crossword puzzles. She also got a great deal of pleasure making quilts and giving them to friends and family.
She was preceded in death by her parents; a son, Fred; and two sisters, Helen Hartness and Juana Roy.
A memorial service will be announced at a later date.
