Guy W. Denniston of 20 Stoneridge Lane, Grove City, died on Monday, Jan. 7, 2013, in Visiting Nurses Association Hospice in Butler. He was 85.
Mr. Denniston was born Dec. 6, 1927, in Butler, a son of Dr. A. Bruce Denniston and Katherine Wigton Denniston.
He graduated in 1945 from the former Penn High School, Greenville, and received his bachelor's degree from Slippery Rock University in 1951. In 1956, he received his master's in education from Pennsylvania State University.
Mr. Denniston was a member of the U.S. Army from 1946-47. On July 23, 1949, he married Margaret Louise Skillen in Third Presbyterian Church, Washington, Pa.
From 1951-56, he was a mathematics teacher and coach for Altoona (Pa.) School District. He served as principal of Towanda Junior Senior High School for two years and as principal of Kane Junior High School for three years. In 1960, Mr. Denniston was elected supervising principal of Montrose Area School District and in 1961, became supervising principal of Logan Area Schools.
When Logan Area merged with Altoona schools, he became assistant superintendent of Altoona Area School District. In 1968, he was elected assistant superintendent of Southern Tioga Schools, Mansfield, Pa., and in 1978, became superintendent of the Bellwood-Antis School District.
In 1983, Mr. Denniston retired as superintendent from Smethport (Pa.) School District.
Mr. Denniston was a member and past president of Smethport Rotary Club and was a member and past president of the Grove City Kiwanis Club. He had been a member of Kiwanis for more than 30 years.
He was a former member of Free and Accepted Masons Hiram Lodge 616 and the Coudersport (Pa.) Consistory and served many years as a Grove City Medical Center volunteer.
As a member of Grace United Methodist Church, Grove City, he served on a number of committees.
Mr. Denniston was a life member of the National Education Association and belonged to the Pennsylvania State Education Association, the National Association of Secondary School Principals and the American Association of School Administrators.
Mr. Denniston enjoyed reading and was a supporter of Grove City Community Library. He enjoyed working on home projects and building doll houses and doll furniture for his granddaughters.
Mr. Denniston is survived by his wife Margaret; his two daughters, Dr. Katherine J. Denniston, Bowie, Md.; and Patricia L. Denniston, Coudersport; and a son, Bruce W. Denniston and his wife Debra, Grove City. Also surviving are five grandchildren, Andrew Haapala, Amanda Haapala, Cassandra Denniston Stull, Cara Denniston Enny and Carly Denniston Smith; two great-grandchildren, Sophia Lynn Stull and John William Enny; and several nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by his parents and two brothers, Robert Bruce and David Albert Denniston.
Calling hours are 9:45 to 10:45 a.m. today (1-12-13) in the chapel of Grace United Methodist Church, 210 S. Broad St., Grove City.
Funeral service at 11 a.m. today in the church sanctuary with the Rev. Howard A. Greenfield and the Rev. Willard S. Morse, co-officiating. A luncheon in the church will follow the service.
Interment in Slippery Rock Township Cemetery.
