Michael J. Messina of Mercer, passed away at 10:50 a.m. Tuesday, Dec. 11, 2012, in John XXIII Home in Hermitage. He was 93.
Mr. Messina was born May 8, 1919, in Sharon to John Messina and Decolina Glorioso Messina.
During his employment, he was in charge of the storeroom at the former Sharon Transformer Division of Westinghouse Electric Corp., where he worked for 42 years.
He was a member of the Westinghouse Retirees group and Loyal Order of the Moose.
Michael was a real conversationalist who told great stories. He enjoyed the Big Band Era.
As a Navy veteran, Mr. Messina participated in World War II from March 1943 to March 1946, having served in the Pacific and having crossed the equator. He was very proud of serving his country and attended all Memorial Day services. He was a member of Immaculate Heart of Mary Church in Mercer.
His wife, the former Mary Foutz Messina, whom he married Feb. 4, 1961, died March 14, 2005.
Surviving are a sister, Sara Dmochowski, Sharon; a loving niece who was his caregiver, Barbara Macey, Sharpsville; and several nieces and nephews. Besides his wife, Michael was preceded in death by his parents, two sisters and two brothers.
Visitation was private.
Mass of Christian burial was Saturday (12-15-12) in Immaculate Heart of Mary Church, Mercer, with the Rev. James Kennelley, pastor of Immaculate Heart of Mary Church, Mercer, as celebrant.
Interment in St. Mary's Cemetery, Hermitage.
