John A. Sample, Grove City, died unexpectedly Friday evening, Dec. 7, 2012, in the emergency room of Grove City Medical Center, Pine Township. He was 78.
Mr. Sample was born in the Forest Hills area of Pittsburgh on Oct. 10, 1934, to the late Joseph N. and Emma W. Casey Sample.
He served in the Army from 1955 to 1957.
John was a 1952 graduate of Wilkinsburg High School. He earned his bachelor's, master's and doctorate degrees at the University of Pittsburgh.
He was professor emeritus of psychology at Slippery Rock University, where he taught from 1971 until 1999. He served as the psychology department chair for nine years. Prior to SRU, he taught at Penn State University for five years.
John married the former Mary M. "Skip" Fowler on July 29, 1961.
They were active with the Grove City Rotary Club, serving as a youth exchange counselors for many years. He also was involved with Grove City Area Historical Society.
When their children were in high school, he was the head cross country coach. In later years John was a volunteer assistant.
Surviving are: his wife, at home; three children, Michael R. Sample and his wife Betsy, Grove City; Joseph C. Sample and his wife Cheryl, Houston; and Becky Cameron and husband Scottie, Mercer; six grandchildren; and a sister, Josephine Winifred Miller, Monroeville.
He was preceded in death by his parents.
Calling hours were Thursday (12-13-12) in the Sample family home in Grove City. A private family memorial service will be held at a later date in Cunningham Funeral Home Inc., Grove City.
