Dr. William C. Menzies Jr.

Retired Grove City doctor was Mason, Rotarian

SHARON — Dr. William C. Menzies Jr., who resided in Grove City, passed away unexpectedly Monday afternoon, Dec. 3, 2012, in the hospital of Sharon Regional Health System. He was 84.

Dr. Menzies was born May 7, 1928, in Scranton, Pa., to William C. Menzies Sr. and Matilda Rosalie Schmidt Menzies.

He graduated from what is now Scranton High School, then matriculated with honors from Lafayette College, Easton, Pa. Upon graduation, he went on to attend Temple University School of Medicine in Philadelphia, graduating in June 1954.

He began his medical care in Allentown, Pa., then became a lieutenant commander in the Naval Reserves.

In 1958, he moved to Grove City and started his family practice, which later became Family Healthcare Partners. He retired in 1998.

As a young man, he attained the rank of Eagle Scout and played the French horn in high school and college bands.

In his adult life, he was member of Free and Accepted Masons; belonged to Grove City Rotary Club, serving as president from 1984-85; and was a member of EAA Chapter 161, American Academy of Family Practice; American Medical Association, Pennsylvania Medical Society, Mercer County Medical Society and Flying Physicians.

From 1978-79, he served as Grove City Hospital"s chief of staff.

He was recipient in 1980 of the Sikorsky Award and accepted several awards from the American Academy of Family Physicians, including his 50-year membership.

Doc"s hobbies included flying his planes, for which he had his VFR and IFR rating.

He loved to travel, play the piano and bridge, play games with his grandchildren and beat everyone at ping pong, well into his 70s.

In addition to his wife, Rose Semenick Menzies, who survives at home, he leaves: four children, Linda and her husband Sterling Smith, Kuna, Idaho; Kathryn and her husband Dave Patterson, Jackson Center; Bonnie Lee Menzies, Sharpsville; and William C. Menzies III and his wife Jackie, Grove City; 13 grandchildren and 23 great-grandchildren; four stepchildren, James and his wife Janice Kyle, Baltimore; Kirby and his wife Sherry Bence, Greenville; Karen Greggs, Sandy Lake; and Kelly and her husband Bruce Hess, Oviedo, Fla.; three stepgrandchildren and three stepgreat-grandchildren; and a niece and a great-nephew.

He was preceded in death by his parents, William and Matilda Menzies; a sister, Matilda Sharpless; two granddaughters, a stepgrandson and a great-grandson.
