GROVE CITY —
Maxine V. Nelson of Superior Street, Grove City, died at 8:15 p.m. Saturday (7-21-12) in Grove Manor Nursing Home, where she had been a resident for the past five years. She was 96.
Miss Nelson was born on April 11, 1916, in New Castle, to George C. and Lillian Belle Dean Nelson.
She moved to Grove City in 1923 from New Castle and joined the East Main Presbyterian Church on Jan. 17, 1927.
Maxine was a graduate of Grove City High School, class of 1935 and New Castle Business College, class of 1936.
Miss Nelson retired 1980 from Peoples Natural Gas Co., of Grove City, where she was employed for 20 years and previously employed by the former Union Heat and Lighting Co., Grove City, for 20 years.
Throughout her years at East Main Presbyterian Church, Maxine taught catechism, sang in the adult choir, and served as a deacon. She helped in the church library and in the church office.
She was a member of the former Grove City Music Club and a member of the Grove City Woman's Club where she served as president from 1983 to 1984.
Maxine did volunteer work at the following places: the hostess shop at the former Grove City Hospital for 20 years, Grove City Meals on Wheels, the American Cancer Society and the literacy office. She did volunteer services at Grove City Area School District and she volunteered many hours of service for 20 years at Grove City Community Library.
Miss Nelson received the Grove City Area United Way Community Service Award on May 9, 1991.
Maxine was preceded in death by her parents.
Calling hours and funeral service were Friday (7-27-12) in Cunningham Funeral Home Inc., Grove City.
Burial in Oak Park Cemetery, New Castle.
