PITTSBURGH —
Richard J. "Stretch" Laverty Sr. of Grove City, formerly of Hermitage, passed away at 2:45 p.m. Sunday, Sept. 30, 2012, in Allegheny General Hospital, Pittsburgh, after an extended illness. He was 80.
Mr. Laverty was born June 10, 1932, in Sharon to Adam and Harriett Hoyland Laverty.
He attended Sharon High School and was a Navy veteran.
Mr. Laverty was employed by Sharon Tube as a furnace welder for 38 years, retiring in 1993.
He enjoyed crossword puzzles and was a Notre Dame and Pittsburgh Steelers fan.
His wife, the former Bonita Lyth, whom he married Aug. 25, 1960, survives in Grove City.
He also leaves: a daughter, Gena Laverty, Sharon; three sons, Robert W. Laverty and his wife LaRayne, Saegertown; James D. Laverty, Sharon; and R.J. Laverty and his wife Danielle, Hermitage; two brothers, Bob Laverty and his wife Anna Mae, Florida; and Archie Laverty and his wife Phyllis, Sharon; his grandchildren, Kayla Laverty, Ryan Laverty, Gabriel Laverty, Jason Laverty, Jessica Laverty, Angel Karenbauer, Jennifer Cunningham, Andrew Runyan, Glenn Irwin, Karen Irwin and Chari Irwin; and nine great-grandchildren.
He was preceded in death by his parents; a son, William D. Laverty; three sisters, Phyllis, Francis and Mary; and three brothers, Tom, George and Delbert Laverty.

Funeral service was Thursday (10-4-12) in the funeral home chapel with the Rev. C. Charles Eckles, pastor of I.H.S. Gospel Ministries, Hermitage, officiating. Military honors will be rendered by the Honor Guard of Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 6233, West Middlesex; American Legion Post 432, Wheatland; and VFW Post 5286, Farrell.
Burial in Hillcrest Memorial Park, Hermitage.
