Richard "Dick" C. McGill, of 109 Old Hickory Lane, Pine Township, passed away at 9:05 p.m. Friday (9-28-12) in Grove City Medical Center, Pine Township, following a 13-year illness with Parkinson's disease. He was 75.
Dick was born in Kennerdell on Jan. 5, 1937, to Carl Raymond and Grace Hovis McGill.
He married Myrtle "Mert" Palmer on Dec. 23, 1955.
He was a graduate of Grove City High School, class of 1954.
Dick served in the Army in Fort Knox, Ky., and Frankfurt, Germany, from 1955 to 1958, making the rank of sergeant.
Following his military time he was a bank teller at the former Grove City National Bank. While working at the bank he met Howard Fargo, a local certified public accountant, and in 1962 he began his career with Mr. Fargo in accounting that lasted for 31 years.
He studied accounting at LaSalle University and at Frederick Swartz C.P.A. Review School, Pittsburgh. Dick became certified as a C.P.A. in August 1967 and soon became partners with Mr. Fargo.
Fargo & McGill expanded the firm and merged with others over a period of years, serving clients with offices in Grove City, Sharon, Mead-ville and Erie.
Dick retired in 1998 as managing partner of McGill, Power, Bell and Associates LLP.
He was a past member of Pennsylvania Institute of C.P.A., holding many offices. Dick served on the board of directors for First Federal Savings and Loan and served through mergers and acquisitions before retiring from the board of First Western Bank (now Huntington Bancshares Inc.) after 20 years of service.
Dick was an active member of Covenant Orthodox Presbyterian Church, Grove City, where he was a 42-year elder, a Sunday school teacher and church treasurer.
He was a member of Grove City Lions Club for 46 years and formerly was on the board of Bashline Hospital and United Community Hospital, both of Grove City, for more than 20 years. Dick is survived by his wife, Mert, at home; two sons, Richard Kent McGill and Bradley Scott McGill and his wife Kathleen, both Grove City; five grandchildren, Alicia Elizabeth McGill, Caleb Joseph McGill, Megan Kathleen McGill, Kelly Jane McGill and Holly Grace McGill; four sisters, Marie Shull, Conyers, Ga.; Shirlee Bell, Franklin; Carolyn McFadden and her husband Richard, Franklin; and Barbara Searcy, Chapel Hill, Tenn.; one brother, Lewis "Nute" McGill and his wife Betty, Titusville.
Also surviving are his sister-in-law, Lois McGill, Utica; and his sister-in-law, Shirley Rider and her husband Tom; and his brother-in-law, Edward Palmer and his wife Karen, all Grove City; as well as a number of nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by his parents and two brothers, Leonard "Pete" and Zane McGill.
Calling hours were Tuesday (10-2-12) in Cunningham Funeral Home Inc., Grove City.
Funeral service was Wednesday (10-3-12) in Covenant Orthodox Presbyterian Church, Grove City, with the Rev. Gerald Dodds, officiating. Burial will military honors at Prairie Cemetery, Harrisville. Memorial contributions can be made to the charitable organization of the donor's choice.
