BUTLER —
Esther Mae Marlowe, Slippery Rock, died at 9:34 p.m. Monday, Jan. 14, 2013 in Butler Memorial Hospital, after fighting a courageous five- year battle against lung cancer. She was 81.
Mrs. Marlowe was born Dec. 29, 1931 in Pittsburgh to Walter L. and Luella W. Cain Sieburg.
She married Joseph Edward Marlowe on Aug. 30, 1951. He preceded her in death on Oct. 8, 1991.
They owned and operated Marlowe's General Store, Route 108 (Moore's Corner's), Worth Township, Butler County, for 28 years until it was sold in 1975. Two weeks following the sale, she and her daughter, Cindy, managed Bob's Sub Shop in Slippery Rock. Cindy took over ownership of the Bob's Ð and operated it with her mother.
Esther was a Protestant.
She played a big part in a lot of college kids' lives; and was affectionately known by many students as "Mom." They later called her "Gram."
In addition to her love of family and friends, she had a keen interest in all Pittsburgh sports, especially the Penguins. She and her daughters, Cindy and Jo Ann, have been season ticket holders of the Penguins since 1984.
Esther was a voracious reader and loved to read James Patterson books, mystery books and many others.
Surviving are: three daughters, Linda L. Wigton and Cindy J. Marlowe, both Slippery Rock; and Jo Ann Marlowe, Pittsburgh; and a grandson, Joseph Wigton, husband of Erin.
She was preceded in death by three sisters, Della Staley, Jean Rapp, Millicent Quinlan; an infant brother; and an infant great-grandchild.
Friends were received Friday (1-18-13) in Smith Funeral Home, 421 New Castle Street, Slippery Rock.
Funeral services at 11 a.m. today (1-19-13) in the funeral home.
Interment in Wolf Creek Cemetery, Worth Township.
