VOLANT —
Walter C. Arnold of Volant, formerly of Plain Grove and Pittsburgh, died peacefully in the arms of his beloved wife on Sunday (12-23-12). He was 93.
Walter was born Oct. 24, 1919, on the North Side of Pittsburgh to Paul and Augusta Borcer Arnold.
He married his wife of 70 years, Dorothy E. Dempsey on April 19, 1942, in First Christian Church of Fairfield, Iowa. She survives him.
He is also survived by: three sons, Eric and his wife Pat, Erie; Mark and his wife Judy, Mercer; and Max, Durham, N.C.; five grandchildren, Christine Roe, Grafton, N.Y.; Paul Arnold, Portland, Ore.; Katie Arnold, West Grove, Pa.; Beth Creekpaum, Sandy Lake; and Phoebe Arnold, Durham; and two great-grandchildren, Anya and Liam Roe. He was preceded in death by his parents; his brother, Paul; and his sister, Ruth.
Walter loved the outdoors and especially enjoyed McConnell's Mill State Park in Lawrence County.
He was an avid wild flower and bird watcher, camper, and an enthusiastic Frisbee player into his 93rd year.
He liked to swim and tinker in his garage. He was an avid reader, especially the writings of Benjamin Franklin and Mark Twain. He was a lifelong Methodist and active in church and community throughout his life.
Walter served in the U.S. Army during World War II and spent his career as an interior design salesman for the former Joseph Horne Co. in Pittsburgh.
The family receivec friends Wednesday (1-2-13) in White Chapel United Methodist Church, Volant.
A memorial service was Wednesday in the church with the Rev. Rick Nelson officiating.
In lieu of flowers, the family requests that a donation be made to White Chapel United Methodist Church, 415 New Castle-Mercer Road, New Wilmington, PA 16142, or the Western Pennsylvania Conservancy, 800 Waterfront Drive, Pittsburgh, PA 15222.
