Lee H. Shilling, Georgetown Road, Sandy Lake, passed away peacefully at 4:45 p.m. Saturday (12-15-12) in St. Paul's, West Salem Township. He was 88.
Born Sept. 7, 1924 in New Lebanon, he was a son of William D. and Helen M. Hayne Shilling.
He attended New Lebanon Country School.
In his early years he worked at the "TNT" plant, Keystone Ordnance in Greenwood Township, Crawford County. He retired in 1984 after 38 years at Greenville Steel Car Co., where he was a welder. He was instrumental in unionizing the shop and served for many years as chief union steward.
Mr. Shilling was a longtime member of New Lebanon Community Church, New Lebanon Grange, and served 32 years on New Lebanon Borough Council, many of those as president. He always worked to make things better for his fellow man.
He enjoyed working on cars, small motors and machinery. He loved to rebuild old things. He fished and hunted as a younger man.
His wife, the former Marian L. Tanecnik, whom he married Jan. 19, 1943, survives at home. Also surviving are: two daughters, Nancy L. Floch and her husband Richard J., Hartstown, and Kay L. Shilling, Sandy Lake; two sons, Richard L. Shilling and his wife Lois, Cat Spring, Texas, and Daniel L. Shilling and his wife Ronda, Sandy Lake; four grandchildren, Jeremy Shilling and his wife Joalla, Bryan, Texas; Karla Shilling, Austin, Texas; Erin Shilling, Coraopolis, Pa.; and Scot Shilling, Midland, Pa.
He was preceded in death by a sister, Eva Chick and four brothers: Clifford, Bernie, Raymond and Kenneth Shilling.
Calling hours were Tuesday (12-18-12) in the Scott A. Black Funeral Home, Stoneboro.
Funeral and committal service were Wednesday (12-19-12) in the funeral home, with the Rev. Dr. Richard C. Steinlechner officiating, assisted by Rev. Virginia LaVan Gadsby, associate pastor of New Lebanon Community Church.
Interment in New Lebanon Cemetery, Mill Creek Township.
