John A. Bell of 420 E. Venango Street, Mercer, passed away at 10:20 a.m. Saturday (12-15-12) in Grove City Medical Center, Pine Township, after an extended illness. He was 85.
Mr. Bell was born May 7, 1927, in No. 5 Mine, Springfield Township, to John Frederick Bell and Catherine Brawley Bell.
He married Margaret A. Logan Nov. 6, 1948. She died in 2010.
Mr. Bell, a 1945 graduate of Grove City High School, was a member of the U.S. Naval Reserve as a seaman 2nd Class, His separation date was Aug. 9, 1946.
He worked at ITT Reznor as a heater tester, and the Mercer Post Office.
He was a member of Immaculate Heart of Mary Church, Mercer.
Mr. Bell played baseball in No. 5 Mine, and was active in the Mercer Area Little League for many years as a team manager and umpire.
He served as Grand Knight in Knights of Columbus Council, and belonged to American Legion Post 159 and Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 6345.
Mr. Bell loved following the Mercer Mustang basketball team and the Grove City Eagles football team. He was an avid New York Yankees fan, but his greatest joy was following the Notre Dame Fighting Irish.
Surviving are: two daughters: Maureen A., wife of Jim Minner, Mercer; and Kathleen M., wife of Chuck Lewis, Erie; a son: John F. (Jack) Bell, Mercer; seven grandchildren: Chas Lewis and his wife, Stacey; Jim Minner Jr. and his wife, Taryn; Mark Lewis; Melissa, wife of Mike Heasley; Stephanie, wife of Dave Buschko; Nikki Bell; and Mary Minner; and six great-grandchildren
He was preceded in death by: his parents; his wife; a son: Timothy Michael Bell; and two brothers: Fred and James Bell.
Calling hours were Monday (12-17-12) in Cunningham Funeral Home, Mercer.
Mass of Christian burial was Tuesday (12-18-12) in Immaculate Heart of Mary Church, Mercer, with the Rev. James Kennelley, priest, officiating.
Burial in All Saints Cemetery, Jefferson Township, with military honors.
