Thelma Larson “Tini” Hume of Grove City died peacefully in her home on Monday, Sept. 3, 2012, after a long struggle with advanced dementia. She was 84.
Mrs. Hume was born in 1928 and grew up in Detroit with her parents, Phillip and Marie Larson, and three siblings.
After graduating from St. Mary's of Redford Catholic High School in Detroit, Thelma worked for the Federal Reserve Bank of Detroit.
In 1946, she met her future husband, George Milton “Spud” Hume, who was visiting his Aunt Eunice, the Larson family's next-door neighbor. Tini and Spud married in 1950 and the couple settled in Grove City.
The couple's five children were born between 1952 and 1961. From 1967 until 2004, Thelma worked side by side with her husband as a secretary for his business, Hume Insurance Agency of Grove City, now owned and operated by Mercer County State Bank.
Tini and Spud sent each of their children to college and contributed love and energy to their community of friends. As time passed, they welcomed many grandchildren.
Her husband, George, passed away June 18 of this year.
Thelma was a loving and loyal wife, a devoted mother and a sweet and gentle person who loved babies and young children, music, good books, travel and conversation.
Thelma Hume is survived by her five children, Roberta Morgart, Raleigh, N.C.; George Milton Hume Jr., Portsmouth, R.I.; Patricia Hammond, Greenville, S.C.; Robin Brownhill, Richmond, Va.; and Douglas Earl Hume, Des Moines, Wash.; as well as 10 grandchildren and five great-grandchildren.
Besides her husband, Thelma's parents and younger brother, Phillip Larson, preceded her in death.
She is survived by her brother, Albert Larson, Livonia, Mich.; her sister, Phyllis Bergeron, Tucson, Ariz.; and 12 nieces and seven nephews.
The family offers special thanks to Visiting Nurses Association Hospice and Thelma's wonderful caregivers, especially Mrs. Carol Caruso, whose constant care and affection made all the difference during her last year.
Calling hours were Friday (9-7-12) in Cunningham Funeral Home Inc., Grove City.
Funeral service was Friday in the funeral home, with the Rev. Janice Good, associate pastor of Tower Presbyterian Church, Grove City, officiating.
Interment in Crestview Memorial Park, Pine Township.
