Parents drop suit against SR district

PITTSBURGH — The parents of a Slippery Rock area teen who committed suicide after being strip-searched at school have dropped a federal lawsuit against the district.

Shane and Sandy Maxwell withdrew their suit Tuesday against the Slippery Rock Area School District. Paperwork filed in U.S. District Court, Western District of Pennsylvania, Pittsburgh, only says they voluntarily dismissed the lawsuit.

The Maxwells did not return a phone call Friday. Their attorney, Barbara Seman Ochs of Sharon, released a statement on their behalf:

"While Mr. and Mrs. Maxwell continue to believe in the merits of the claims asserted in the lawsuit, the defendants' initial disclosures and other new information that has been recently revealed to Mr. and Mrs. Maxwell have convinced them that pursuit of this lawsuit may only magnify the consequences of Tiffani's tragic death without accomplishing a purpose beneficial to anyone."

The Portersville couple say school officials wrongly strip-searched and suspended their daughter Tiffani, 16, over allegations that she brought drugs to school.

Tiffani fatally shot herself the day after she was given a 10-day suspension in January 2011. Her parents say she was afraid the punishment would keep her from being promoted to the next grade.

Slippery Rock superintendent Dr. Kathleen Nogay, who has said the Maxwells' allegations are baseless, said Friday she wouldn't be issuing a statement on the lawsuit being dropped.
