Baker helps kids win with library programs

GROVE CITY — Heather Baker runs - and has introduced - popular programs for kids at the local library.

One of her favorite inventions has been a cupcake and cookie decorating class that averages about 20 kids - including boys.  "They love it. They demand it," Baker said.

It's not only fun, but "it helps with motor skills, following directions and being neat. I have it down to a science with them."

Three students won the cupcake decorating category at Fall Fest in Grove City Memorial Park this year. "I was very, very proud of those girls," she said.

Her American Girl Doll spring tea parties have been a real hit for 10 years. "There's a waiting list," Baker said. She runs the library's teen programs, family nights, movie nights, book character nights and activities based on themes in various books - such as the Revolutionary War. Its summer reading program is the largest in the county, with more than 600 kids.

Baker began the six-week, summer Cinderella Club two years ago and reads for story time every Tuesday for ages 3 to 6 all year. Bookworm Babies is the library's "most popular program," she added, which involves parents bringing their children 18 months to 3 years old to learn listening skills with songs, stories and finger plays for six weeks. "It's a nice experience for moms to connect with each other and their kids," Baker said.

Sparking friendships between parents is why she started Library Buddies Play Group, for moms with newborns to children age 3 to play for 1½ hours on Friday mornings in the program room.

The room and other improvements are part of a recent expansion at the library.

"Moms can talk as loud as they want now and kids can be a little more independent from their parents," Baker said. "It's been a blessing to be in a room where I can close the door and not disturb library patrons."
