MERCER —
Girl Scouts Western Pennsylvania has presented Jody Roberts with the Girl Scout Gold Award, the highest recognition for achievement in Girl Scouting.
Jody, daughter of Steve and Hope Roberts, is a senior at Mercer High School and also serves in a leadership position as a camp counselor for the visually impaired; as a member of her church youth group and Bible school staff; as a member of the high school concert band; as a volunteer in a second grade classroom; and has been inducted into the National Honor Society.
As a Girl Scout member for 12 years, Jody is a Girl Scout Ambassador of Troop 30025; and supported by her Gold effort by Stacy Brandes, Kristen Gregory, Hope Roberts and Kathy Shaffer of the Mercer Area Girl Scouts.
Her Gold Award project began in March 2010 and was completed in July 2010. Jody and fellow troop member Makayla Neely organized a “Healthy Earth, Healthy You” clean-up day in the borough of Mercer.
Jody’s “Healthy Earth” component focused on taking care of the local environment and teaching people about recycling. Posters and a display outlining what is recyclable and what is not, were set up to help the clean-up day volunteers put collected items in the correct trash bags. Mercer mayor, Steve VanWoert, served as project advisor.
Various local businesses were contacted and donated supplies such as trash bags and gloves, advertising aids such as printing flyers and radio and newspaper ads, and prizes for gift basket drawings. Tri-County Industries supplied a dumpster and the borough supplied a truck. The scouts divided the borough into four clean-up zones and volunteers worked in teams to pick up trash and bag the recyclables separately. The event emphasized that maintaining a healthy environment leads to a healthier you.
Jody will graduate in 2011, and plans to attend Slippery Rock University to major in special education.
As the premier leadership experience for girls in the United States, Girl Scouting builds girls of courage, confidence and character, who make the world a better place. For more information visit www.gswpa.org.

Leave whimsical garden items for Old Man Winter
In the latest edition of Keystone Wild!Notes editor Jessica Sprajcar says, "Fall marks the prelude to a cold, white, winter, but it also signifies the ever changing, ever impressive nature of the environment."
I think gardeners are extremely in tune with the changing seasons, we have to be.
But the one settling in on us now might be the hardest to endure. What's a gardener to do to keep her outdoorsy self busy during winter? - More Community Headlines
